What is a kotatsu?

A kotatsu is a traditional Japanese heating device that consists of a low, wooden table covered by a blanket or futon, with a heat source placed underneath. The heat source can be an electric heater or a charcoal brazier.

Kotatsus are commonly used during the colder months in Japan to provide warmth and comfort to those sitting around it. They are often found in homes, restaurants, and traditional Japanese inns (ryokan).

The tabletop of a kotatsu is often removable, allowing for easy access to the blanket or futon for cleaning or storage. Some modern kotatsus also come with built-in features such as temperature controls and automatic shut-off timers.

Sitting around a kotatsu is a cozy and communal experience, where people can relax, eat, read, or socialize together while staying warm. It is a popular piece of furniture in Japanese households and is a symbol of comfort and hospitality.
